The Bar Nun could very well be making her devotions at your shop in the near future! Her mission from grill ... to test the vocation of her lay brothers and sisters in the sacred art of mixology and its trappings.

The music is live and folksy; trad night at Auckland's Thirsty Dog on Mondays is such a welcoming affair that my expectations are high for poetry slam tomorrow night and reggae evening on Thursday. The bar itself comprises an eclectic mix of influences represented by idiosyncratic decor options secreted here and there, whilst leaning heavily on the Irish-accented London pub theme complemented by fresh flowers on the bartop and a hand-illustrated point-to-soup menu board which provokes a smile though my Guinness moustache. Most of the punters seem familiar with each other, and those that aren't are assimilating fast.

However funky the music is, there's nothing like a bank of TV screens to suck the energy from a room. Lolabar,

With greater than usual risks to the nun’s sobriety, it is decided there is safety in numbers. Father Daniel directs Sister Mari to accompany the Bar Nun on this her first expedition into the realms of intemperance. Bolstered only by their devotions, Sister Mari and Sister Antoinette head for these dangerous foreign shores to assess the moral turpitude of the natives.
In preparation the nuns entered one of the island’s enclaves of refinement, Te Whau Vineyard’s stylish restaurant and wine bar. They are happy to report that the venue lived up to its reputation for fine food, service and ambience. Although this midwinter visit revealed a quiet night, mine host Tony Forsyth was in generous form, offering complimentary wines with no inducement whatsoever.
Thus fortified the nuns’ habits were well concealed as they ventured out into the isle’s wilds.

The atmosphere is warm, the air almost too much so, and the music's too loud and intrusive to have a soothing effect on the digestive tract, but the food is being well received and there are happy people spending money at Chapel in Auckland's Ponsonby Road, so it must be working for someone.

Finally, I can breathe and hear myself think. That's not a bad top shelf for a small bar either... I feel welcome at Mea Culpa (3/175 Ponsonby Road), the elegant layout and understated decor make me feel very grown-up and sophisticated . |

Grand Central at 126 Ponsonby Road is where the hip kids come to relax and not have to be so hip. The bar staff seem to be having just as good a time as the punters, which contributes just as much to the positive vibe as the free drink on the door. |
